"In what was a forerunner to the modern beauty contest, the loveliest of the Incan maidens were put to the test during a celebration that came with the full moon.  Chosen not only for their physical beauty but their dignity and their ability to perform their tasks, the girls would start at moonrise and dance till midnight, their white and gold regalia shimmering in the cool silver of the evening.  At midnight the best dancer - more often than not the only one who was able to survive the rigorous marathon - was proclaimed Maiden of the Mother Moon."  (Liner notes, 1956 re-pressing)

This song finds Yma again using the growl and also boasts a range exceeding three-octaves.  In "Choladas," however, the growl is executed differently than in "Tumpa!" (Earthquake!).  Rather than the guttreral growling found in the latter song, this growl stems from vibrating only the throat membranes which Yma amplifies by adding mouth resonance.  This lends a bright, forward quality.  It also allowed Yma to take the "growl" as high as she wished.

Like other songs on this album, this is a vocalise and one of its main glories lies in Yma's classical, flowing legato - even when using the "growl."  As in "Tumpa!" (Earthquake), there is a carressing manner to Yma's singing and warm, rich tone.  The second section finds Yma again dancing among high, pointed staccati.

The last measures of the song finds Yma using her humming effect.  The high notes from C to E flat are hummed with the mouth completely closed.  A thin, wiry sound, it creates quite an errie effect.  This is similar to the French soprano Mado Robin’s trick, during the late 1940s, of humming to G above high C.  Yma's humming is left by a descending glissando which reaches into the lowest contralto area.  The supporting orchestration of spiraling violins and a insistent drum beat provide an exotic flavor that aptly supports Yma’s singing.  (A.N. -on earlier releases the low note was left out.)
