| This song, also in d minor, has an interesting, though limited, chant-like flavor that is apealing. The main theme is reiterated in various octaves with different vowel sounds. Most of the song centers on the top of the voice where the use of high C and D is constant. Although such taxing tessitura can be extremely tiring, Yma sails through with alacrity and ease. The "growl" is here too and taken quite high, produced by Yma vibrating her throat tissues while singing the core of the tone in head voice - a most unusual effect. Although short, because of the use of multi-tracking, this song is quite a vocal exhibition. This is especially true of the last segment, where a number of Sumacs take off in cadential flourishes building to a final, unison high D while, underneath, other Sumacs growl lustily. |
