This is a wonderful little piece, a slight, atmospheric concoction that serves to display Yma's range and some interesting chant-like phrases. It opens with descending figures played by chimes, and then the main melody is introduced by Yma with round, contralto tone. Accompanying string and woodwind instruments, resembling rustling wind or a light summer rain, seductively weave around the voice. Although initially plaintive, the song builds to a triumphant conclusion with Yma moving from open, deep chest voice through lyric soprano regions and then swooping to a feather-light top D which is gently floated to the end. The orchestration of this song with its use of bells, chimes, strings, flute, harp, various woodwinds and brass is very colorful and shows [Les] Baxter's masterful art of exotica arrangement. It is unfortunate that Yma never used the piece in concert since it was an excellent frame for her lyrical singing and was colorful and pleasant. |
